How to use the templates

The fashion figure or croquis is used in design presentations where a more flamboyant style of illustration is required to increase visual impact.

After you have chosen your templates to download, and you are ready to illustrate your chosen garment design, for hand drawing proceed as follows:

Print out a chosen figure.
Use any white paper that is semi-transparent, not too transparent – as you’re going to cut this figure out and present it on a storyboard. 80 - 60g cartridge is good
Begin to trace – if you own a light box, this is very helpful. If not, then place your template and new paper against a window, this allows bright light to shine through your image for easy tracing.
Trace the entire figure using an HB graphite pencil
Store the template in a folder for future use, now work with the pencil tracing
Begin to draw the clothing along the body of the figure template, taking note of how clothing would drape on the body. Think of the body as a coat hanger, providing the shape on which a garment will hang and drape around it. Your design should not appear flat, like a paper doll.
Once you have completed your pencil sketch, and you are satisfied with all the details you can proceed to finish it off in fineliner ink (if you choose an outlined image)
Erase all pencil lines properly, or this will interfere with your finished product

Resize with your photocopier if necessary
Colour in accordingly
If you choose to draw in Macromedia Freehand or Adobe Photoshop, then just retrieve the image from your saved folder via either chosen program and start drawing over the image.
