Tools Used for Fashion Illustration:
The tutorial below will guide you through the fashion drawing tools you need to create your final work of art.
A primary function of art and thought is to liberate the individual from the tyranny of his culture in the environmental sense and to permit him to stand beyond it in an autonomy of perception and judgment.
"Lionel Trilling"
I have always used colour markers in my work. This is a choice and there are plenty of options when fashion illustrating. Here are some of the fashion design resources you should stock up on. Correct fashion drawing tools makes life a lot easier:
·
Colour markers (Copic, Pantone and Triart are my favourites)
·
Watercolours
·
Colour pencils (I find Prismacolor superior!)
·
Graphite pencils
·
Chalk
·
Gouache
·
Charcoal
·
PC for digital illustration
·
Black ink fine-liner (0.1 pin through to 0.5 pin)
·
Rollerball ink pens
·
Colour pastels
The tools you'll need when drawing and doing technical drawings:
·
Ruler -15 and 30cm (if you can, get Aluminium)
·
Set square (small and large)
·
Set of French curves
·
Flexible curve (also great for patternmaking, as seen below)
Using the PC for fashion sketches:
Fashion illustration and design can be done on a computer or on with freehand. However, you should use your PC and the printer as much as possible, even when drawing freehand. This saves time when you create storyboards, which is a vital skill to have. When you use our fashion templates, make sure you are resourceful and organised. Keep the templates in a folder or scanned into the computer (computer skills is a must in the 20th century). Use the internet for any questions you might have, as you will find almost anything if you have a little patience and use good search words.
Creating Fashion Templates with Corel Painter:
Inspired by the work of Tobie Gildio, Cher Threinen-Pendarvis. Here we utilized Painter's Pens and Watercolours to create her this fashion template.
When you begin, start by opening a new file on Corel Painter, and size it to 1500x2000 pixels. Add a new layer to the image. In the Brush Selector Bar, choose the Pens option from the Brush Category menu. The Thick ‘n Thin variant should then be selected from the variant menu. Practice with that pen by making some marks on the opened canvass. When you feel confident to continue, delete the practice strokes by choosing Select > All and Delete/ Backspace. Press Command-D to Deselect. This illustration was made by doing the basic lines with this pen, as it allows you control and a variety of thickness of the lines. Use the stylus to add sweeping, curved vertical strokes that suggest the outlines of your subject. Shorter strokes add accents and detail.
Tip:
Brush Tracking enables the most responsive and accurate brush strokes, so it would be a good idea to set it up. It allows you to customise how Painter interprets the stylus input, including factors such as pressure and speed. Choose Corel Painter IX > Preferences > Brush Tracking, and make a representative brush stroke in the window. For instance, if you plan to use both light and heavy pressure, sketch slowly and then quickly. Using these brushstrokes will show you representatively how Brush Tracking works.
You can add texture to your fashion sketches in the line work with the two strangely named pen variants – the Leaky Pen to add textured spots, and the Coit Pen for textured line accents. Choose the Leaky Pen variant and make a few practice strokes using a light pressure to begin the stroke. When you have completed this, apply heavier pressure. Add more irregular texture with the spotted strokes. Linear accents are created using the Coit pen, as shown on the detail of the skirt in the accompanying illustration.
Next, choose to create a new layer and then choose the Broad Water
Contrast your colours to make the fashion sketch seem livelier. Choose the Soft Broad Brush variant of Digital Watercolour; using the Soft Broad Brush allows you to paint smooth-looking, wet-into-wet washes. The small amount of Diffusion in the brush allows you to lay brush strokes next to one another with the paint blending subtly between the edges of the strokes. Wet Fringe, also in the brush, allows the paint to pool slightly at the edges of the wet area of pain. Saving your work in a RIFF formats allow your working file design to stay "wet" between sessions.
How to create a woman’s face in Photoshop – nine easy steps
This guide is designed to help you design the fashion templates of women. For this tutorial you will need any version of Photoshop.
Step one: creating the base
First, you need to create a new canvass – the larger the better, as it will keep the quality when you want to downsize it later. Create a new file (File > New), size it to 500 x 500 pixels. The background must be white and keep it in
Next, you need to create a gradient to represent the woman’s hair. Duplicate your background layer, (right click it and choose duplicate layer. Then change the layer’s name to "hair") and then set the foreground colour to "#c03c85" and your background colour to "#d27db8". Change the layer styles (Layer > Layer styles > Gradient Overlay) by choosing "Gradient Overlay". Apply the dark-to-light pink gradient. Leave all settings at default, but make sure you click the invert box.
Now you must create the base for the illustration by setting the foreground colour to "#da7a96" and background to "#f9f0f1". Next use the elliptical SHAPE tool, but NOT the marquee, to draw a long, oval face that is offset to the right. It will look like the shape is filled with a gradient. The face is not filled with the gradient even through it may look like it. This is an optical illusion created by the program. Double click the layer’s text and name this layer "face". Once you create the oval for the face, you need to ‘rasterise’ the shape. This step allows you to create the smooth, non-pixellated lines that make crisp, professional graphics and illustrations. This is why the shape tool instead of the marquee tool was used in the first step. Finally, to apply the gradient overlay to the face, follow this track: Click > Layer > Layer Styles > Gradient Overlay and apply the pink-to-almost white gradient. Again, leave settings at default, but tick the "inverse" box. At this point, it is best to save your work to be safe, as you have completed a lot of steps!
Step two: basic additions to the face
Firstly, you need to create the nose for fashion template. To do this you should set the foreground colour to "#bb5674". Create a new layer (Layer > New > New Layer) and then go to the paintbrush tool. Load the calligraphic brushes set and choose the 15px oval. Now, click once on the new layer to create the right nostril. Duplicate this layer (Right click and choose "Duplicate Layer") and click: Edit > Transform > Flip horizontal. This allows you to move the right nostril into place. Right click the duplicate layer and choose "Merge Down". Then, name the layer "nose". If you want to change the nostril shapes, you can play around with the "Smudge" tool.
Next, you need a mouth for your woman’s face. Download a free shape set and install it. Then select your custom shape tool and load up these shapes, select the mouth and draw it out. To add shine you can set the foreground colour to white and add a long oval to the lower lip. Lower the "Fill" of this shape to about 21%. Right click and choose "Merge Down". Name the layer "Mouth".
Thirdly, you need to design the eyebrows. This method makes the pieces easier to position. Use your elliptical shape tool and create an oval with the right shape at the top. Then use the elliptical marquee tool to cut out the bits you don’t want. To finish this off, you should duplicate it, flip it, and finally merge it.
Step three: creating the eyes
The eyes are more difficult than the rest of the face. Again, with the correct fashion drawing tools and fashion design resources, this task becomes a lot easier. First, you should make your foreground colour white and draw an oval. Use this pathway to tilt the shape downward at the inside: Edit > Free Transform. Alter the shape as you continue and then duplicate the layer and flip it. Move it into place and merge it down. Now select your face layer, use your magic wand to select the shape of the face, and then click "select" and choose "invert". Then go right back to your eyes and select that layer. Hit the backspace key on your keyboard to remove all the white that currently goes into the hair.
Next you need to create the eyelashes for your face. Use the same method as the eyes, by drawing a black oval and deleting portions of it to frame your eyes with black eyelashes. Like the eyebrows, the eyelashes will extend past the border of the face. The fashion sketch is starting to take shape now.
For the next step, you need to create a black circle with several pixels inside that. Create a light purple circle for the iris with several more pixels inside this. Then create a dark purple circle for the pupil. Finally you should create a pure white highlight circle for the eye, a pure white highlight oval and lower the fill to about 25%.
Adjust the colour scheme to achieve different looks, or just use the layer styles. The fashion sketch for a woman’s face is now finished. Feel free now to add any accessories you want, such as makeup or jewellery. Don’t forget that your fashion template needs to be taken care of – store it correctly!
